Why Wristwatches are Making a Comeback

While Apple Watch sales are dominating the smartwatch market, the digital wearables market seems to be cooling off. This may be one more sign that analog wristwatches are making a comeback.

Here’s why classic timepieces never go out of style.

Smartwatch sales are down

CNNTech article from October 2016 reports that worldwide sales of smartwatches were down 52 percent in the third quarter of 2016, compared with the same period in 2015, according to a report by the market analysis firm, IDC. Makers of smartwatches sold 2.7 million of them in the third quarter of 2016, compared with 5.6 million of them at the same time in 2015. And while Apple Watch sales are dominating the global smartwatch market share with an estimated 12 million shipped in 2016, according to a February 2017 article in ibtimes.com, Apple sold just 1.1 million of its Apple Watches in the quarter, compared with 3.9 million a year earlier — a 72 percent decline.

Why wristwatches are coming back

It’s hard to say why smartwatch sales have declined, but there is some consensus on why classic analog wristwatches are making a comeback. “Most consumers no longer need time on their wrists,” says a representative from Timex. “Instead, they’re looking for a stylish accessory, a performance tool, or simply a means of self-expression.”

Countless styles and options

Watches are more affordable than ever, and also come in countless styles — so consumers are buying multiple watches for different uses. And why not? Watches come in all shapes, sizes and colors: some have interchangeable faces and bands; some have jewels and other embellishments; and are made of every material from rubber to the classic leather straps to pure gold.

“There are just so many options,” says an accessories editor for SELF magazine. “You don’t have to spend a lot of money on a watch. Both women and men have watch wardrobes these days. People might have their investment watch, their work watch, a daytime watch and even a fun selection of watches for weekends.”

Timeless sophistication

Watches are a quick and easy way to check the time — more convenient than having to pull out your cell phone. But they also make a great impression about you to the world. Watches are also just plain classy — there’s a sense of perennial sophistication that goes with wearing a watch on your wrist.

Many people, both men and women, are wearing timepieces as fashion accessories. “Jewelry and ornamentation is a big trend,” says an industry insider. “For some men, a watch may be the only jewelry he allows himself, so the choice of a functional sport piece or an elegant, gentlemanly style is a key element of self-expression.”

A fashion-trend director at Timex reports that a growing trend is women wearing men’s watches. Whether you like a more substantial, broader-faced watch or wear it as a power move, ladies make sure the band fits, the director says.
